Candied Walnuts

 (an old friend from Sacramento)

1 qt.      walnuts meat
1 C         sugar
1/2 C      brown sugar
1/2 C      water
 a pinch of salt
  a little vanilla
a lump of butter the size of an egg

    Bring all ingredients, except the walnuts and vanilla,  to a boil.  Boil until mixture makes a soft
ball in cold water.
    Take off stove, stir and add the walnuts and vanilla.  Stir until sugar crystallizes.
